Multi level product categorization for import and export data

We categorize import and export data in various products with multi level product categorization. For example, let's see for Chapter 72
First level: We categorize the data in broad categories (Steel, Stainess Steel, Ferrous Scrap, Ferro Alloys and Metallics)
Second level: Each of the category is then further categorized. Steel is categorized in more than 30 products like Billets, Wire Rods, Tinplate, etc. Likewise, Ferrous Scrap is categorized as HMS, SS Scrap, etc. Product list for Chapter 72
Third level: Based on specific requirement, a product is then further classified by sub level category. For example, Coated Products as Prepainted or Galvanized, etc or Electrical Steel by Grain/Non Grain Oriented.

The product categorization is done on the basis of key words in the product description and HSN number based on the logic duly agreed with our clients.

Case Study 1 - Categorization of Coated Products

Requirement: Coated products are imported under Chapter 72 primarily in HS codes 7210, 7212 and 7225. The task was to categorize the imports into various products like Prepainted, Galvanized, Galvannealed, etc.
Data Processing: Coated products are categorized in 14 sub-products. A list of key words were compiled for each of the product. Search and categorization based on HS codes and key words were compiled in a program that processed the data and categorized in various products.
Analysis and Reports: Once the data was categorized, analysis and reports were prepared based on quantity imported and price of import.

Case Study 3 - Non Grain Oriented (Electrical Steel) analysis by Grade

Requirement: One of our clients, a leading company that imports Electrical Steel wanted a report on the import of Non Grain Oriented Electrical Steel by Grade. Electrical Steel is imported under Chapter 72.
Data Processing: Two steps were involved here. Firstly, the data was categorized in GO and Non Grain Oriented. Secondly, once the Non Grain Oriented data set was available, a list of grade was compiled and then the data was categorized by various grades.
Analysis and Reports: Once the data was categorized, analysis and reports were prepared based on quantity imported and price of import for Non Grain Oriented.

Case Study 4 - Stainless Steel Coils - Extracting Grade, Width and Thickness

Requirement: Stainless Steel Coils are one of most imported products under Chapter 72. Some of our clients were in need of data to be categorized by Grade. Additionally they required Width and Thickness to be separately mentioned.
Data Processing: Firstly the data was categorized by Grade. Secondly, our analytics team worked on compiling a program that extracted thickness and width from product description. The data was then categorized by grade, thickness and width.
